Shaving My Head for Charity
As for another cause close to my heart, I took a step to support Family House, an organization that provides temporary housing for families traveling to distant hospitals for specialized treatment. After learning more about what the organization does, I noticed that some of the children they served lost their hair as a part of their treatment. I was heartbroken for them, and I was driven to do what I could to support their cause.
Back in high school, I was Student Body President, and I decided to use that platform to talk about the cause. That next week, I pledged to shave my head in front of thousands of students upon reaching our fundraising target, $2500. Knowing that this would help with donations, I decided to go through it, and I don't regret it.
I chose my very popular English teacher to shave my head. She gave me what I call the “reverse fade.” You might hear a lot of guys getting their hair cut short on the sides and long at the top. Yeah, this was the complete opposite. She decided to mess around with my hair a bit before shaving it all off.
This story, to me, captures what I mean about remembering “why.” I don’t know if I would have ever volunteered to shave my head in front of everyone if it weren’t for this fundraiser. There were also moments where I doubted if this was even a good idea. However, I knew I definitely wanted to do it when I saw my friends donate for the sole reason of seeing me get my head shaved in front of everybody. Looking back, I don’t regret it one bit.
